Book overview

On the one hand, five volumes in to Manning's 'Fortunes of War' sequence, I've become so involved in the lives of the cast of characters that this is an entirely satisfying continuation of the story. On the other hand I'm not entirely convinced it works as an individual novel - it feels a little disjointed: where Simon Boulderstone's introduction in the previous volume was a brilliant move, allowing Manning to show the War from the army side as well as the civilian, here the two strands - Harriet's and Simon's - that had merged in and out of each other so well in 'The Danger Tree', seem completely divorced. Guy is reduced to a minor character (not necessarily a bad thing as he is a little one note and predictable) allowing newer characters like Angela, Edwina and Bill to shine. The descriptions of the Battle of El Alamein are brilliantly realised, but two incidents towards the close of the novel that should be tense and shocking fall curiously flat.
Still, as with the other two of her books written in the seventies that I've read ('The Danger Tree' and 'The Rain Forest'), the writing here is much stronger and less inhibited than in the earlier Balkan books, written in the sixties, and I find myself both eager and sad to be approaching the final novel in the sequence.
